April 7th - Pisco

Today we went on a tour to see the Islas Ballestas.  We took a boat for about an 1 1/2 hour tour around the Islas.  First we saw lines drawn into a mountain that they are unsure what the purpose is for.  Then the boat took us to another part of the mountain where we saw lots of different types of birds and sea lions.  We saw millions of birds and learned how they harvest guano three or four months out of the year.  They sell 60 kilos of guano for a $150.

Our next stop was at Aceros Arequipa where another Rotarian, Jose, graciously hosted us. We all enjoyed the company of Jose, also known as Pepe, very much.  We realized after spending the day with him, he was the Casanova of Pisco.  He made us all laugh very much.  At Aceros Arequipa, one of the largest factories in Peru, they produce different steel products.  We were able to tour the factory and see the whole process from mixing the carbon and iron, to melting the steel, producing large steel bars, and then turning those steel bars into different steel products.  They mostly turn the steel bars into what we know in the states, as rebar.  We saw the steps they take to heat and stretch the steel bars into the rebar.  It was very fascinating tour that we all enjoyed very much.

Our guests sent us off to Ica with another wonderful lunch with lots of laughs.
