After our long journey from Nazca to Arequipa, we all got settled in our host family’s homes. This is the first time since we have been in Peru that we are all in our own individual homes and not together as a group. Although this experience is nerve wracking at times for some of us it is also very nice to get to know our families on a more personal basis.
After much needed resting time, we headed into the city of Arequipa. Arequipa is very beautiful and is very busy. The city’s population is approximately 1,000,000 people. And there are a lot of old and beautiful buildings that exist all through the city. Arequipa was not affected by the earthquake in 2007 like Chincha, Pisco, and Ica were.
We were able to tour the city and visit a few museums in the city while taking in the beauty of it all. We also had the time to shop in a few local stores, including an alpaca clothing designer store. Our evening wrapped up with a meeting with the Arequipa Rotary Club. This is one of 14 Rotary Clubs in Arequipa and they are the second oldest club in Peru.
Our days are very busy in Arequipa so we promise to post pictures as soon as we have some more resting time.
