April 14th - Colca Canyon Valley Tour

We started our morning very early at 6 am.  We left the city of Chivay to head up into the Colca Canyon Mountains to the Condor Crossing.  Along the way we got to stop several times and take photos of the beautiful landscape.   The valley was very green and there was a lot to see.  We got to see terraces built into the mountainside during the Ica time period.  So some of these terraces were over 4,000 years old.
This is one of the first days in Peru that there is not too much to say about what we were doing during the day.  It is really something you have to see to understand.  It was some of the most beautiful landscapes any of us have ever seen.
Our destination point was near the top of the valley where on average people are able to see five to seven Condors at a time.  We experienced a very special day because at one point we saw almost twenty Condor birds flying near us.  This experience was something that all of us will never forget.  Before heading back down the mountainside we got to walk about thirty minutes along a trail at the top of the mountains.
Once we arrived back home to Arequipa we got to spend some time with our host families, then we had a meeting with the Arequipa - Nueva Era club.  They hosted us with a more informal dinner and we had the opportunity to talk to some younger Rotaract students.
