We started our morning with Maria Theresa, Christa’s host family. She took us to the Mitchell Alpaca factory where her husband, Pepe another Rotarian, works. We got to see all the steps they use to make thread and yarn. It was very interesting to see and something we all enjoyed. Then we got to shop in their store where they sell alpaca clothing, accessories, and alpaca yarn. Susan said it best, “Andrea found her yarn heaven.” Most of us found something to take home, Andrea a little more than others, and we felt very grateful to Maria Theresa for taking us there.
We next headed to lunch where Maria Theresa treated us to the American restaurant, TGI Friday’s. The restaurant was the same as it is in the states and we all appreciated eating something so familiar.
We next went to the Cathedral of Arequipa. We got to see inside this amazing building and walk through the museum showing some of the history of the Catholic religion here in Arequipa. We then got to walk to the top of the Cathedral to see the bell tower up close and see amazing views of the city of Arequipa.
We then got to walk and shop around Arequipa. The weather here is amazing and it was nice to spend the day exploring the city more. We ended our afternoon by heading back to our host family’s homes where we got to spend some time with them before we headed to Cusco, our next city.
