Our host club for the day was the Inca-Cusco Rotary Club. We started our morning with a casual breakfast on the plaza with many members of the club. Our first official stop for the day was at a school that is very old and prominent in the Cusco area. Many of the students that attend this school continue on to college and earn higher quality jobs. We got to see some of the classrooms and see what the Inca-Cusco Rotary club has done for this school. Their biggest contribution is donating school desks for different classrooms.
Our next stop was at the House of Hope in Cusco. This is an amazing place. It is run by a small group of women. This house is a shelter for young girls who have experienced some form of abuse in their homes or on the streets. This house helps these girls recover and begin transitioning to a more positive life style. The house will also help these girls if they are pregnant or need assistance with their children. The girls learn basic life skills at the house as well as skills they can use possibly later in life for work or to make money. They learn how to sew, knit, and make jewelry. They also make items with these skills and have items for sale that will eventually benefit the House of Hope and the girls themselves. They girls also are responsible for taking care of their house and it is seems like a very positive environment. We were able to talk to the director, some volunteers, and the girls in the house. We were also able to make purchases of items they have made.
We then went to lunch with the Inca-Cusco club at traditional Peruvian restaurant. The rest of our day was spent with our host families.
