April 22nd - Machu Picchu

April 22nd we visited one of the new wonders of the world – Machu Picchu.  We started our morning early by leaving Cusco at 3 am so we could get to the train to Machu Picchu at 5 am.  We then arrived at the village of Machu Picchu around 7 am and met our tour guide for the day.  We then headed up the mountain to start exploring this vast citadel.  Machu Picchu is located on top of a mountain at approximately 2,400 meters above sea level.  The beauty of the entire mountaintop is unbelievable.  The entire time we were visiting Machu Picchu we could not help but wonder how the Incas created this magnificent set of structures.
For the first half of the day we walked around the citadel with our tour guide, Nilo, as he showed and explained some more intimate areas of Machu Picchu.  Then after a brief lunch we headed back up to the terraces to sit and enjoy the beauty of it all.  We got to hang out around Machu Picchu until about 3pm and then headed back to the village.  We ended our evening by eating dinner in the village and browsing some of the local shops and attractions they have in the village.  We then caught the train late and headed back to Cusco.  The best explanation for this day was captured with the immense (a little over 1,200) amount of pictures we took on this day.
